Inquire ↗About the work
You once knew the shape of their face without trying. Now you have to reach for it. Somebody That I Used To Know leaves the portrait unpainted. There is no face beneath the white surface and nothing has been erased. The absence is deliberate. What the viewer remembers becomes part of the encounter: someone they loved, someone they lost touch with, or someone they no longer recognize. The title names a person without identifying them. The canvas gives that missing likeness a place in the room. It does not ask the viewer to explain who belongs there. The work is complete with its surface blank; its separate title and concept text carry the portrait.
